Securing Your International Driving Permit For Your Move Abroad
When someone makes the decision to move abroad, there are many things they must do to prepare for a normal life in foreign surroundings. One of the most important things is securing an international driving permit so that they can drive in a foreign country. Obtaining one is actually rather simple, but it is important that the process is completed correctly and in a timely fashion for a smooth transition.
Before making a move overseas, it is important for someone to find out the rules in their country of destination concerning an international driving permit. In some countries, all someone needs to drive is their native license, but others do require an international permit for driving. Still, other countries will accept the permit for driving, but only during the time that someone spends obtaining a local driving license.
It is also important for international movers to realize that they cannot wait until they arrive in their new home to get an international driving permit. It is necessary for all drivers to apply for the permit in their native country prior to departure. The application process is very simple and only requires an application, a copy of the native license and an identification picture.
When applying for an international driving permit, someone must decide what type of permit they want and this will be based primarily on how long they will be living abroad. A one year permit can be obtained for only thirty-five United States dollars. There are also options, at varying prices, that are valid for three, five and ten year periods.
Moving to a foreign country can be very exciting, but it requires planning. Obtaining an international driving permit should not be left until the last minute because it can take four to six weeks to process the application. Once someone finds out the rules of their new country and obtains a permit, they will be able to explore their new surroundings by car.
