Packing Glassware To Avoid Opening A Box Of Broken Glass
Packing up an entire home for a big move can be a very daunting task. It is important to keep everything organized according to room and to pack things in a way that will keep them from breaking in transit. One of the most delicate items that will get packed for a move is the dishes and it is important to know the proper way of packing glassware. Otherwise, movers run the risk of getting to their new home and finding all of their glassware broken.
While traditional cardboard moving boxes are fine for most things, they may not do the trick for packing glassware. Try asking the moving company if they have dish barrels instead. These sturdier boxes are named for the wooden barrels that ship glass overseas, but many movers have them in cardboard. They cost a bit more than traditional moving boxes, but the expense is far less than replacing all of your glassware.
Of course, when packing anything fragile, it is important to have proper padding. Before packing glassware, it is a good idea to pad the bottom of the box or dish barrel with soft paper, such as newsprint. Each individual piece of glassware should also be wrapped in paper before going into the box. It is fine to use newsprint but for someone who does not want to have to wash every dish immediately, packing companies offer white packing paper.
When it comes time to actually put the pieces in the box, one of the most important things to remember for packing glassware is to put the heaviest items on the bottom. This means that things such as plates and bowls should go on the bottom, while delicate wine glasses should stay on top. The heavier items are likely to be sturdier and better equipped to handle the stress of a move with other items on top of them.
Packing glassware is more time consuming than packing other items, but it is well worth the effort. Nobody wants to arrive in their new home and not be able to have a glass of water because all of their glasses are broken. Pack the dishes carefully and the family will be able to enjoy a meal and drink the very first night in their new home.
